저는 유튜브를 잘 안 보는 편이라서 유튜브 스타라고 하셔도 잘 몰랐습니다. 요즘은 유명한 유튜버들이 거의 책을 집필하는 추세인데 아마 구독자로 이미 검증이 되었기 때문이겠지요.

I’m not a frequent viewer of YouTube, so even if you were called a YouTube star, I wouldn’t have known. Nowadays, it seems that many famous YouTubers are also publishing books, probably because they have already been validated by their subscribers.

This book is as well-edited as its cover is pretty.

책에는 풍부한 사진과 함께 진짜 리얼한 표현이 많이 실려있습니다. 그 양이 어마어마한데 201 유닛 중 극히 일부만 보자면 다음과 같습니다. 쉬운 단어들이지만 표현이 정중한 느낌이 듭니다. 반말 존댓말로 보자면 존댓말 같고, 돌려서 말했지만 의미 전달은 확실히 되는 느낌이 듭니다.

(x) I can’t answer right now.

(o) I’ll see what I can do.

(x) Meet me at 3:30 o’clock.

(o) Meet me at 3:30 sharp.

요즘 아이들 문제집에도 QR 코드가 기본으로 들어있는 경우가 많습니다. 이 책도 각 유닛 별로 QR 코드가 있어 쉽게 따라서 말하고 반복할 수 있습니다. 구슬쌤이 말씀하신대로 무조건 따라 말하고 연습해서 자연스럽게 나오도록 체득해야 합니다.

The book includes many real expressions with abundant pictures. Though it’s an enormous amount, let’s take a look at a few examples from the 201 units. Though the words are simple, they give a polite impression. If we were to look at them in casual or polite terms, they seem polite, and even when paraphrased, they still convey the message effectively.

Nowadays, many children’s workbooks include QR codes as a standard. This book also has QR codes for each unit, making it easy to follow and repeat. Just as Bead-nim mentioned, you should follow and practice without fail to make it come out naturally.

예의바른 영어표현

What are you working on

요즘 우리 아이가 하나 배워서 줄기차게 써먹는 표현이 있습니다. What are you doing now? 어른들에게는 뭐라고 말하는지 물어본 적이 있습니다. 영어는 존댓말은 없지만 예의 바른 표현이 있으니 함께 보시면 좋을 것 같습니다. work on(생산적인 일)이 생산적이다는 느낌을 주는 표현도 같이 익힐 수 있으니 부담없이 자주 사용해 보시려고 합니다.

Polite English Expressions

“What are you working on?”

Lately, our child has been using an expression passionately that says, “What are you doing now?” I once asked adults what they say in such situations. English doesn’t have honorifics, but there are polite expressions, so it might be good to see them together. “Work on” gives a sense of productivity, so we can learn this expression without feeling burdened.

그리고 각 유닛 하단에 “이럴 때는 이렇게!”라는 추가 표현이 있는데 이 또한 아주 유용하고 방대한 양으로 구성되어 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 이런 요구 사항은 꽤 많이 받아봤는데 진짜 예의 바르게 거절하는 표현입니다. 질문도 예의 바르고 대답도 예의 바르고… 한국어로도 이렇게 제안 받는다면 배려 끝판왕이 될 듯합니다.

완벽함을 추구하겠다는 집착을 조금 내려놓고 이미 충분히 괜찮다는 자신감을 가지셨으면 좋겠습니다. (p157)

Also, there are additional expressions at the bottom of each unit called “In This Case, Do This!” They are very useful and have a vast amount of content. Such requests have been received quite often, and it’s an expression that politely declines. Both the questions and answers are polite. If we also receive such proposals in Korean, it would be a masterclass of consideration.

총평

아이들은 영어의 굴레에서 자유로워지길 바라고 있습니다. 늘 영어는 좀 자신 없이 대답해 주거나 회피하거나 검색해서 알려주는 게 전부였는데 시간이 좀 걸려도 천천히 이 책을 공부해보려 합니다. 사실 예전만큼 부담스럽진 않습니다. 정보는 너무 많고 의지의 문제임을 경험을 통해 깨달았기 때문이겠지요. 마음만 먹으면 무료로 단어를 외우는 어플과 작문 연습, 그리고 회화까지 예전만큼 많은 돈과 정보는 필요하지 않을 수 있다고 생각합니다. 2021년 아직 1월인데 아직 목표를 세우지 못했습니다. 이 책을 1회독 해보려 합니다.

Conclusion

Children hope to be free from the constraints of English. It used to be that English was only about answering without confidence, avoiding, or searching for answers, but I plan to slowly study this book even if it takes time. Frankly, it doesn’t feel as burdensome as before. With so much information available, it seems that the issue lies in one’s determination. If the will is there, various free apps for memorizing words, practicing writing, and even conversation can be utilized without spending as much money or needing as much information as before. It’s still January 2021, and I haven’t set specific goals yet. I plan to read this book once.

I highly recommend it.
