Contrary to the title, a book that compelled me to read!
While raising a child in 4th grade and another in 1st grade of elementary school, there was never a moment when they didn’t understand the concepts in Korean and Math. When they started learning larger numbers and addition and subtraction of fractions with common denominators, I was slightly bewildered, but this book explained the reason behind it.

아이가 4학년을 어려워했던 이유는 초3을 완벽히 복습하지 않았기 때문이었습니다. 좀 더 솔직히 말하면, 그때 중요한 것으로 생각하지 않았거나 중요성을 모른 채 지나간 것이라 부인할 수 없었습니다. 물론 수업 시간에는 누구보다 집중해서 들었다고 믿어 의심하지 않습니다. 하지만 집에서 다량의 학습을 하지 않았기 때문에 그날의 학습이 많았다면 건너뛰거나 생략하는 경우도 많았습니다. 또한, 집에 와서 한 번 더 복습을 충실히 하지 않았다는 것을 이 책을 통해 깨달았습니다.

The reason my child found 4th grade difficult was that they hadn’t thoroughly reviewed 3rd grade material. To be more honest, I couldn’t deny that there were things they either didn’t consider important back then or simply passed over without realizing their significance. Of course, I firmly believe that they paid more attention during class time than anyone else. However, since they didn’t engage in substantial studying at home, they often skipped or omitted things if there was a lot to cover on a given day. Moreover, through this book, I realized that they didn’t faithfully review the lessons at home.

무슨 학습 격차를 초등학생까지 부여하나 싶겠지만 요즘 교육에 관련된 종사자들조차도 인정하는 분위기입니다.
이 책은 학부모들을 불안하게 만들어 사교육 시장으로 몰려가게 하는 책이 아닙니다.
초등 3학년부터 누구보다 먼저 선행을 해야 한다는 말은 많이 나오지 않습니다. (선행할 것은 따로 있습니다!)
다만, 초등학습과 자존감에 직결되는 부분에 좀 더 신경을 써 주고, 초2 겨울방학부터 준비를 하면 도움이 되는 내용이 자세히 나와 있습니다.

PART 1 addresses the beginning of the learning gap, starting from 3rd grade, and
PART 2 covers 5th grade, where the learning gap deepens.
Although some might wonder why there is such a learning gap in elementary school students, even professionals in the education field these days recognize its existence.
This book is not intended to make parents anxious and lead them into the private education market.
It rarely suggests that you should get ahead starting from elementary 3rd grade. (There are exceptions!)
However, it does provide detailed insights on caring more about aspects related to elementary learning and self-esteem, and it offers guidance on how to prepare from the winter vacation of 2nd grade onwards.

초등학교에서 초3 이상의 학년이 특별히 중요한 근거는 무엇일까요? 초등학교 1~2학년은 크게 차이가 나지 않아 눈에 띄지 않지만, 3학년이 되면 아이뿐만 아니라 부모도 멘붕에 빠질 정도로 어려워집니다.
교과서를 보면 갑자기 배워야 할 것이 많아져 혼란스러워집니다. 이런 생각에 멍해져 있던 기억이 떠오릅니다.
저학년티가 없어지고 초등학생답게 자기 주도적으로 학습해야 하는 시기가 3학년입니다. 이때 분수와 소수에 대한 기본을 배우며, 사회과학 교과도 추가됩니다. 그래서 이 학년은 학습 격차가 눈에 띄게 나타나는 것 같습니다. 작가의 주장은 반박할 수 없는 것 같습니다.
그렇다면 초등 3학년 이하의 부모님은 무엇을 해야 할까요?
이 책에서는 과목별 체크 항목들을 소개하고, 우리 아이의 부족한 부분을 보충하는 방법과 잘하는 부분을 더 잘하는 방법 등 구체적인 방법을 제시합니다. 따라서, 현재 초1부터 초3의 부모님들이 한 번쯤 읽고 고학년을 대비한다면 좋을 것 같습니다.

What makes elementary school from grade 3 onwards particularly important? While 1st and 2nd grade don’t differ significantly, when it comes to 3rd grade, both the child and the parents can get overwhelmed by the sudden increase in difficulty.
Looking at the textbook, you get confused because there’s suddenly so much to learn. I recall being lost in such thoughts.
The 3rd grade is the time when they shed their lower-grade vibes and become more proactive in their learning. During this time, they learn the basics of fractions and decimals and are introduced to social science subjects. Hence, it seems like a stage where the learning gap becomes more apparent. The author’s argument seems irrefutable.
So, what should parents with children below 3rd grade do?
This book introduces subject-specific checklists and provides specific methods to supplement their child’s shortcomings and improve on their strengths. Therefore, parents of 1st to 3rd-grade students might find it helpful to read this book once and prepare for higher grades.

아직 미취학 부모님들에게는 이해하기 어려울 수 있는 내용일 수 있습니다. 하지만 이미 초3을 지나간 부모님들도 초등 5학년이 학습 격차를 줄이는 마지막 마지노선이 있기 때문에 고민하지 않아도 됩니다. 따라서 초등 4학년을 다 보낸 부모님들도 이 책을 읽어보면 좋을 것 같습니다.

However, even parents who have passed 3rd grade can feel at ease since there is still the last resort of reducing the learning gap until 5th grade. So, even parents who have already passed 4th grade might find it beneficial to read this book.
5학년 수학
이 단원을 보면 초등 5학년까지는 대부분 가르칠 수 있다고 생각하는 분들이 많을 수 있습니다. 그러나 어려운 응용 문제를 설명할 수 없는 상황이 발생하여 덜컥 겁부터 났고, 솔직히 5학년부터는 학원을 다녀야 할 때가 되었다고 생각했습니다. 이 책을 읽고 5학년과 연계되는 부분을 보충하면서 준비하면 집에서도 5학년까지 수학을 해볼 수 있겠다는 희망이 생겼습니다. 초등 4학년에 알게 된 것에 감사할 따름입니다.
5th Grade Math
Some might think that elementary education can be easily managed until 5th grade. However, I found myself unable to explain difficult word problems and felt uneasy, thinking that it was time to send them to a private academy from 5th grade onwards. After reading this book and supplementing the parts connected to 5th grade, I gained hope that I could help my child study math at home. I’m truly thankful for what I learned in 4th grade.
아이가 공부를 왜 해야 하는지 묻는다면?
부모라면 한 번은 들어봤을 질문이다. 내가 중학교나 고등학교 학생을 키워보진 않았지만 그 시절을 지나왔는데도 이 질문에 뭐라고 대답해야 할지 난감해서 얼버무리곤 했습니다.
초등학교 1학년 아이에게는, 하고 싶은 모든 일을 준비하는 것이 공부라고 말했고,
초등학교 4학년 아이에게는, 모르는 것을 알게 된 즐거움의 경험, 공부했던 문제집에서 문제가 나왔을 때의 신기함을 느끼게 해줬습니다. 그리고 주위 어른들 이야기를 해주었습니다.
책에는 그에 대한 구체적인 답변도 나와있습니다.
“부모님이 아무것도 안 하는데 그냥 터지지는 않습니다.”
이 한 줄의 문장에는 겁먹을 필요는 없습니다. 진짜 우려할 일은 아이와 관계가 무너져 더 이상 엄마도 멘토도 될 수 없는 상황이 되는 것이 더 위험하기 때문입니다.
내 아이의 머리와 속도가 있음을 받아들이고, 늦으면 다시 시작하고 빠르면 조금 여유롭게 초등학교 공부를 마무리하는 것이 좋을 것 같습니다.
부모가 아무것도 안 하는 게 아니라, 나이, 직업, 경력을 불문하고 궁금한 건 공부해가며 알아가는 모습을 아이에게 보여주고 있으니 함께 성장해가는 지금을 기억해 주면 좋습니다.

When Your Child Asks Why They Should Study
This is a question most parents with children have heard at least once. I didn’t raise middle school or high school students, but even after passing those stages myself, I used to be flustered and mumbled when asked this question.
For my 1st-grade child, I said that studying was about preparing for everything they wanted to do.
For my 4th-grade child, I let them experience the joy of discovering things they didn’t know and the wonder of encountering problems they had studied in their exercise books. I also shared stories about adults around us.
The book provides concrete answers to this question.
“Your parents won’t just blow up if they do nothing.”
You don’t need to be scared by this one line. The real concern is when the relationship with your child breaks down, and you can no longer be their mother or mentor. That is the more dangerous situation.
Accepting your child’s pace of learning and, if necessary, starting again if it’s too slow or proceeding a bit more leisurely with their elementary school studies would be a good approach.
As a mother, I’m not doing nothing; I’m showing my child that, regardless of age, profession, or experience, I’m continuously learning about things I’m curious about. Remember that we are growing together right now.
