문명 베르나르 베르베르
베르나르 베르베르는 출판되는 책마다 관심을 한 몸에 받는 작가 중 한 명입니다. 그의 책을 오랜만에 읽게 되어 기대감을 가지고 읽었습니다.
“나는 고양이 바스테트. 이집트 여신의 환생이자 전 세계를 다스릴 몸이니 <고양이 폐하>라고 불러주면 좋겠어.” 도도한 고양이의 성격을 잘 드러낸 이 한 줄이 많은 의미를 담고 있다는 것을 책을 덮기 전까지 깨닫지 못했습니다.
베르나르 베르베르의 전작 <고양이>를 먼저 읽어보고 싶다는 생각이 들어 문명을 읽기 전에 먼저 읽어보고 싶습니다. 고양이를 읽은 독자들은 문명을 어떻게 받아들였을지 궁금합니다. 문명 1권은 총 2막으로 1막은 지상낙원, 2막은 제3의 눈으로 구성되어 있습니다. 문명 2권은 2막은 제3의 눈, 3막은 유머, 예술, 사랑으로 구성되어 있습니다.
Civilization Bernard Werber
Bernard Werber is one of the writers who receives attention with each published book. I read his book with anticipation after a long time.
“I’m a cat Bastet. I’m the reincarnation of the Egyptian goddess and the body that will rule the world. You can call me Your Majesty.” I didn’t realize until I closed the book that this one line, which well depicted the arrogant personality of the cat, contained a lot of meanings.
I want to read Werber’s previous work, “The Cat,” before reading Civilization. I wonder how readers who have read “The Cat” received Civilization. Civilization Volume 1 consists of two acts: Act 1 is Paradise on Earth, and Act 2 is the Third Eye. Civilization Volume 2 consists of Act 2, and Act 3 (Humor, Art, Love).
상상력
우선 소설의 주인공은 고양이입니다. 그것도 인간을 집사로 둔 도도하다 못해 폐하라고 부르라는 자기애가 무척 강한 고양이입니다.
고양이의 습성을 잘 아시거나 실제 집사를 자처하고 계신 분들은 이 고양이의 행동 묘사에 상당히 애착을 느끼며 읽으셨겠지만, 전 사실 고양이를 잘 모릅니다.
게다가 소설은 얼마 만인지 처음 베르나르 베르베르 작가가 등장했을 당시 열광하며 읽다가, 후속작으로 낸 작품을 거의 읽지 못했습니다. 특히 이 문명을 읽다가 잠깐 “한니발”이 누구였지? 하고 다시 처음으로 돌아가는 사태까지 발생하고 말았습니다.
구구절절 재밌는 이야기들이지만, 쉽게 몰입하기는 어려웠습니다. 고양이의 특성을 잘 모르는 것도 있었지만, 집사의 습관과 관련된 디테일한 묘사와 아들과의 대화에서 나오는 유머 등이 조금 어색했습니다. 하지만 1권 후반부에서는 드디어 몰입을 이룰 수 있었고, 2권은 시작부터 분위기가 잡혀 이틀 만에 읽을 수 있었습니다.
그러나 인간이 집에 데리고 살게 되면서 고양이와 친해져서 마침내 <주인>이라고 불러주게 된 것 같습니다. 하지만 나는 그런 관계를 맺을 수 없을 것 같습니다.
Imagination
First of all, the protagonist of the novel is a cat. And not just any cat, but a cat with such an ego that it demands to be called Your Majesty, even having a human as its servant.
Those who know a lot about cats or those who consider themselves cat servants may have read it with great affection, but I don’t know much about cats. And the novel… I was a huge fan when Bernard Werber first appeared, but I haven’t read many of his works since then. Especially while reading Civilization, I even had a moment of “Who was Hannibal?” and went back to the beginning.
The story was interesting and all, but it was hard to get into. I didn’t know much about cat behavior, and the detailed description of the owner’s habits and the humor that came out of conversations with his son were a bit awkward. However, I was finally able to immerse myself in the second half of Volume 1, and the mood was set from the beginning of Volume 2, which I could read in two days.
But I don’t think I could have formed such a relationship with a cat that would call me its owner.
고양이와 인간의 차이점
그리고 고양이와 인간의 차이점에서 허기를 느끼는 것은 인상적이었습니다. 특히 하루 세 끼를 먹는 부분은 정말 누가 정한 건지 의문스러울 정도로 자주 먹는다는 생각을 요즘들어 해왔습니다. 이 부분에서 고양이의 습성을 배우고 싶다는 생각까지 들 정도입니다. 맙소사.
이 소설에서는 동물과 인간이 서로 대화가 가능하다는 제3의 눈을 가진 피타고라스의 등장과 티무르가 이끄는 쥐떼들의 공격 등의 이야기가 전개됩니다. 이러한 상상력 속에서 현실적인 일이 일어날지도 모른다는 생각에 조금 두려움을 느낄 수도 있습니다.
Differences Between Cats and Humans
And I was impressed by feeling hunger at the difference between cats and humans. Especially the part where they eat three meals a day made me wonder who decided that they should eat so often. These days, I’ve even been thinking that I want to learn about cat behavior from this part. Oh my goodness.
This novel develops stories such as the appearance of Pythagoras, who has the Third Eye, which allows animals and humans to talk to each other, and the attack of the rat tribe led by Timur. In this imagination, you may feel a little scared that something realistic might happen.
총평
이 책은 다른 독자들이 어떻게 읽었는지 궁금한 소설 중 하나입니다. 장르소설은 어렵다기 보다는 다소 모호한 편이지만, 이 책을 즐기는 분들은 2권에 비해 1권은 느린 전개라는 느낌이 들 수 있다고 생각됩니다. 또한, 이 책에서 주는 베르나르 베르베르의 상상력과 유머 코드는 받아들이는 개인에 따라 상당히 다를 수 있습니다.
하지만, 이 책에서 제시된 “만약 인간을 대체할 종이 있다면?”이라는 가정은 충분히 현실성이 있으며, 고양이들을 잘 관찰하면서 아이들과 함께 읽기는 어렵겠지만 상상력을 발휘해 보는 시간을 가지고 싶다는 생각이 듭니다.
Overall Review
This book is one of the novels that I wonder how other readers read. The genre novel is somewhat ambiguous rather than difficult, but those who enjoy this book may feel that Volume 1 is slow compared to Volume 2. Also, Bernard Werber’s imagination and humor codes in this book can vary widely depending on the individual.
However, the assumption presented in this book, “If there was a species that could replace humans,” is quite realistic, and while it may be difficult to read with children while observing cats, I want to take the time to exercise my imagination.
